What to expect this hurricane season
According to early forecasts, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season could be busy. Colorado State University researchers are calling for 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes and four major ones. With warmer ocean temperatures fueling storm activity, it’s smart to prep early.
What hurricanes do to your lawn
Even if a storm doesn’t cause structural damage to your home, it can still take a toll on your yard. Here’s how:
- Too much rain equals not-so-happy roots
When your lawn gets more water than it can handle, it can start to drown—literally. Saturated soil prevents roots from getting oxygen, leading to yellowing grass, root rot, and fungal problems. - Soil erosion and nutrient loss
Heavy rainfall can wash away the soil's top layer and the nutrients your grass needs to stay healthy. After a storm, your lawn might look fine on the surface but struggle to bounce back. - Wind and debris damage
Fallen branches, flying yard decor, and even outdoor furniture can gouge or flatten your grass. Wind can also cause compaction, which squishes the soil and makes it harder for grass roots to grow.
What you can do to prepare
While you can’t stop a storm, there’s a lot you can do to help your lawn weather it:
- Keep it trimmed
A well-maintained lawn handles water better. Mowing regularly and keeping the grass at the right height helps drainage and prevents matting. - Aerate if you haven’t yet
Aerating your lawn (especially before the storms hit) allows rainwater to drain down into the soil instead of pooling on top. - Watch your fertilizer timing
Skip the fertilizer if a storm is in the forecast. Applying it right before heavy rain can wash it away—and straight into the storm drains. - Clear out the yard
Before a storm, walk your property and secure or store toys, patio furniture, and anything that could become flying debris. - Plan for post-storm recovery
Have a game plan for after the storm. This might include raking up debris, reseeding bare patches, or boosting your lawn with a slow-release fertilizer once things dry out.
